I’ve spent 18+ years hiring creatives & tech talent. Most people don’t have a career problem – they have a visibility problem.

In the createch space, there are three things hiring managers care about:

– Can you solve relevant problems?

– Can you show me proof?

– Can you communicate like a pro?

The mistake I see every week?

Talented people relying on a generic CV and a quiet LinkedIn profile to do all of that heavy lifting.

If you want to optimise your career, start with this simple audit:

1. Skills – What skills are actually paying your bills right now? List them.

2. Proof – Do you have 3–5 recent examples (projects, campaigns, code, content) that show those skills in action?

3. Story – Does your LinkedIn headline, About section and Featured content tell that story clearly?

When you fix visibility, everything else gets easier: more replies, better interviews, and stronger offers.

I’m sharing weekly breakdowns on creative/tech careers, AI at work and side hustles that fit real life.

When everyone looks the same, nobody stands out

I was in Sainsbury’s the other day and stopped at the protein bar section.

It’s come a long way. Years ago it was basic, bland, barely worth a second look. Now? Every brand has serious design behind it. Top agencies, real budgets, bold packaging.

But take two steps back and they all blur into one.

You can’t tell which one is better. You can’t tell which one has quality protein, which ones are loaded with sugar, which claims are legit and which are just expensive words on a wrapper.

You’d have to pick up every single one just to start understanding what you’re actually buying.

Everyone’s shouting. Nobody’s saying anything different. 📦

London in colour 2026

Grey skies, quiet streets, zero coffee cups in sight.

On my way to work and it struck me, five years ago everyone was walking around with a Starbucks or Costa like it was part of the outfit. A hot drink as a fashion accessory. Today? Not one person. Not a single cup.

Cost of living. More home working. A shift in how we move. Who knows. But London always tells you something if you pay attention.

We’ve had barely any sunshine since January and you can feel it. So if the grey is getting to you — find something on the horizon. A holiday, an event, a day to look forward to. Doesn’t have to be big. Just has to be real.

Spring is coming. Hang tight. ☀️

“Echo-One Transmission #2089” – The Creative Industry’s Apocalypse Email

Every so often in this job, someone sends you an email that makes you laugh it’s a joke, but because it captures the exact mood of the moment with such brutal accuracy it almost hurts.

This is what landed in my inbox the other day from a creative team:

Hi Dean,

This is Echo-One transmission #2089.

We’re broadcasting from the remnants of what used to be Creative Sector 14, if anyone’s still out there.

Power’s low.

Hope’s lower.

We were a creative team before the sky fell.

Our specialisms now are rebel radio scripts, resistance TVC broadcasts, anti-social campaigns.

Bunker work or on-site after nightfall.

If this signal reaches you, anyone, we’re available.

God-speed please.

We’re running out of SPAM.

Stay human.

Funny, right? But also… not?

Because underneath the wit, this hits a bit close to home. The creative industry right now does feel like a war zone. Ghost-town briefs. Endless holds. Radio silence from brands. Roles pulled. Budgets cut. Teams gutted.

And what’s left? A lot of brilliant people stuck underground, sending out flares and hoping someone still needs what they do.

This post isn’t just a tribute to a clever email, it’s a nod to all the people out there keeping their humour intact while navigating an industry in flux. Creative work hasn’t died. It’s just gone deeper underground. More resourceful. More self-aware. Maybe even more powerful, if we get it right.

So if you’re out there, still making, still reaching out — stay human.

There’s life beyond the bunker.

🤖 4 Smart Ways to Use AI to Prep for Your Next Job Interview

Most people spend hours scrolling through company websites before an interview but only a few minutes actually practising how they’ll answer questions.

AI can change that.

Instead of losing time to research overload, you can use tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude to focus on what really counts: clear, confident answers and smart questions that help you stand out.

Here are four ways AI can help you prepare faster and maybe even better.

1️⃣ Spot the Key Skills and Qualifications

Before you start memorising company facts, let AI show you what matters most.

Copy the job description and ask:

“Act as a hiring manager in the [industry] sector. Identify the five most important qualifications and the five key skills for this role: [paste job posting].”

This gives you a focused list of what the employer truly values and what to highlight in your responses.

2️⃣ Predict the Interview Questions

You don’t need to guess what you’ll be asked anymore.

Use AI to anticipate the questions likely to come up:

“Pretend you’re the recruiter hiring for this position. What interview questions would you ask to assess experience, culture fit, and technical skills for this role? [paste job posting].”

This helps you prep targeted answers and eliminate the element of surprise.

3️⃣ Align Your Strengths with the Role

Now it’s time to connect the dots between your CV and the job.

Upload or paste your resume and ask:

“As an experienced career coach, review this resume and highlight where it aligns and where it doesn’t with the job requirements below. [paste resume and job posting].”

This gives you instant insight into how to tailor your examples and address any skill gaps upfront.

4️⃣ Create Thoughtful Questions to Ask the Interviewer

The best interviews are two-way conversations.

AI can help you sound prepared and curious by generating smart, relevant questions to ask at the end:

“You’re an experienced job seeker interviewing for [job title]. Based on this job posting, what 10 meaningful questions could I ask the hiring manager to learn more about the company and culture? [paste job posting].”

These questions show genuine interest and help you decide if the company is the right fit for you.

💡 Final Thoughts

AI isn’t here to do the interview for you it’s here to help you prepare smarter.

By using tools strategically, you can walk into your next conversation informed, confident, and ready to show why you’re the best choice for the role.

Freelancer Check-In: AI, Availability & Market Signals

Just had a thoughtful exchange with one of the brilliant freelancers in my network, and it echoed something I’ve been hearing a lot lately: The UK job market is a real mixed bag and a cooled freelance marketplace.

And honestly? I’m seeing the same.

The market has been the toughest I’ve seen, sluggish, delayed sign-offs, and tighter budgets across the board. But interestingly, some talent have stayed busy throughout. So what’s behind that?

I started digging into a few questions:

  • Are clients starting to ask for AI expertise in briefs more often?

  • What AI-related skills or tools should creative freelancers be adding to their CVs?

  • Are there any AI courses or certifications brands actually care about?

I’d love to know:
👉 Have you seen a rise in AI-focused briefs?
👉 Are you upskilling in AI tools like Midjourney, ChatGPT, or Runway?
👉 Do clients care about AI fluency, or are they still trying to figure it out?

In the meantime, a lot of us are pushing through the slower seasons, but I’m optimistic things will pick up again come 2026. If you're a freelancer, permalancer or contractor, now’s a good time to:

✅ Update your CV/portfolio
✅ Refresh your skills
✅ Check in with your network
✅ Consider an AI lens on your offering

Drop me a message if you’re available, or if you just fancy a market catch-up.

Stay strong out there!

AI Isn’t a Bubble. It’s a Board Reset.

The power shift is already happening and most people are still asking the wrong question.

“AI is a bubble.”
That’s what people say when they’re terrified by big numbers and even bigger charts.
But this isn’t meme-stock froth. It’s a technological land grab so aggressive, it’s basically imperialism powered by the big corporates.

AI isn’t a hype cycle. It’s a reset.
The rules are being rewritten by companies that already own the pieces: Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, Meta, Amazon.

They have the compute, data, scale, and distribution. Everyone else? They’re just playing on someone else’s turf and paying rent to do it.

The takeaway?
This isn’t about chasing shiny new toys. It’s about understanding that AI is the next electricity.
And sitting out because it feels “too late” might be the most expensive decision you never make.

Stay frosty!
